Cockapoos love to be the center of your universe, and they don’t know they stink if not bathed regularly. Cockapoos are a poodle and cocker spaniel mix, and their coats can be straight, curly, wavy or any number of combinations. Their smell from running around, playing outside and rubbing their back into the grass can be off-putting when they want to sit on your lap or lay in your bed. Here are some tips to keep your cockapoo smelling great!
Baths
I give my furry friend a bath once a month. I use a mild dog shampoo and a coat conditioner with orange essential oil to ensure we get a sweet-smelling pup to hang out with. One important tip: don’t get water in a cockapoo’s ears as they are prone to ear infections. Coconut oil is a great moisturizer if their fur is dry and dull after the bath.
Nails
What about those nails? Trimming a dog’s nails can be dangerous, so I take my four-legged friend to the veterinarian several times a year to trim them professionally. Feel free to do it yourself if they don’t mind the clippers.
Fur Trimming
Using the proper hair trimming tools is important in giving your dog his best hair trim. I purchased an electric dog clipper set, scissors, several combs, and brushes to use at home to reduce my expenses. I have over 25 years of experience trimming dogs’ hair. My experience was trial and error as my parents only took our family dog to the groomer during the holiday season. Any other time, it was left up to me to figure it out. By the way, I did a great job.
Brushing
Let’s talk about daily grooming. Since our cockapoo loves attention, grooming will be viewed as sharing time together, and my dog loves spending extra time with me. I try to brush my dog’s fur daily as their hair will get tangled, and they don’t like their fur snagging.
Cologne
Lastly, if you want your dog to smell extra good, spray him down with dog cologne. He’ll be strutting down the street during his next walk. Just beware of his sassiness.
