Update on the Vegetables I Transferred Mid-Season

Oct 15, 2023 | Editorial Team

Remember, I mentioned that the location where vegetables are grown is critical. Because of this sunny location, my vegetables flourished. I feel the only way to develop a successful home vegetable garden is by trial and error and learning from others. I thought it would be grand to close the summer growing season by sharing my successes and failures with the vegetables I transferred mid-season.

As you know, I successfully transferred six vegetables without issue from my old, raised beds to the new, deeper raised beds. If you haven’t seen that article, you can check out Six Vegetables I Successfully Transferred Mid-Season. After a few weeks, each plant started producing more flowers and some fruit.

Here’s the end-of-season result of the 6 vegetables I relocated mid-season:

Early Jalapeño Peppers

All 4 plants produced a fantastic number of peppers. I had so many peppers that I could share them with friends. It’s mid-September, and the jalapeños are still producing.

Calabrian Chilies

These plants have a surprising amount of fruit growing, and they will be harvested when they start turning red or before the temperate drops below 50 degrees. The other option is to create a hoop house to keep the fruit from getting cold at night. I’m also excited to collect the seeds from these plants, as getting quality seeds and seedlings was tough.

Tomatoes

The 4 different varieties of tomatoes, Hybrid Celebrity, Heirloom Rainbow Blend, Sweet Million and Roma plants, produced a great deal of fruit. The Sweet Million plant produced the most fruit daily. I also planted basil next to each plant so I could smell and taste basil when the tomatoes were cut. Next season, I aim to plant at least 8 varieties of tomatoes and lots of basil.

Homemade Pickled Cucumbers

The two cucumber plants took slightly longer to adjust to the new location but didn’t produce many cukes. I was able to harvest a few, but not enough to can. Next season, the cucumber plants will be planted in a sunnier location.

Sweet Peppers

I planted various sweet peppers; all the plants produced fruit and are still producing. Next season, I’m hoping to grow bigger and more abundant peppers.

Eggplant

This plant doubled in size and produced several medium-sized eggplants. This is another plant that I will include in my garden next season.

I hope this update is helpful.  As you begin looking at potential garden spaces, please take the time to locate a space that gets the most sun and where trees will not shade the garden. Remember, growing vegetables requires at least 8 hours of sun daily.
